The problem of the Asian wasp

The problem of the Asian wasp (Vespa velutina, or Asian hornet) is a problem that affects all of northern Spain and Portugal, so it is vitally important to fight the attack of the Asian wasp on our hives.

The problem of the Asian wasp (Vespa velutina, or Asian hornet) is a problem that affects all of northern Spain and Portugal, France, England and Italy. so it is vitally important to fight the attack of the Asian wasp on our hives.

In addition, each year the amount of the territories affected by the wasp attack increases progressively and, therefore, also increases the number of hives affected.

Beekeepers need a viable solution against the Asian wasp and that guarantees success results.

The Apiavant hive protection module has been tested for 3 years by SERPA (a company specialized in the control and elimination of the velutin scooter) and is presented as a viable solution that protects the hives against the attack of the Asian wasp, offering a high percentage Survival of hives. It should be noted that the survival rate of hives will be higher if the hive protective module is complemented with additional traps to eliminate scouring wasps.

One of the most interesting advantages of the protection module is that it allows the hive to continue its normal activity even if there is pressure and siege by the Velvet wasp. Thus, we will prevent the hive from entering defensive mode and blocking (which would mean that an important part of the bees would be dedicated to defending the hive instead of collecting pollen and producing honey). This would mean that the bees that were dedicated to defending the hive of the Asian wasp would deplete all their forces and resources in defensive tasks instead of collecting pollen, and would lack reserves. Then, the hive would face the winter weakened both by the losses suffered by the attack of the velvet scooter and also by the lack of pollen due to the low productive activity (the bees were dedicated more to defend themselves than to produce).

That the hive enters a defensive way would lead to a decrease in the exploration and collection of pollen by the bees, so that less and less food would reach the queen and decrease the collection and feeding activity, which it would lead to the queen bee interpreting that the season is running out for lack of food and that the time has come to hibernate before the natural hibernation time. This would be very negative, since the hive would begin hibernation much earlier (and, therefore, the hive would have to survive a longer hibernation longer than natural, decreasing the hive's chances of survival).

In the observation study carried out for 3 years by SERPA, it has been observed that with the protective module installed the hive increases its normal activity by approximately 45 days. In this way, the hive can better prepare its hibernation period, even if there is a siege by the Asian wasp.

The hive, hibernating before due to the attack of the Asian wasp, we have 2 main negative consequences:

1. We would have less pollen collection, honey production and food, which would lead the queen to hibernate ahead of time.

2. Bees, when hibernating before, would have to spend a much longer winter, so it is possible that the hive would arrive much weaker in the spring (since many bees will not have survived this artificially long winter).

Therefore, the advantage of the hive protector module that we highlight today is mainly that it allows the hive to continue flowing in its normal activity typical of the season in which it is being besieged by the Asian wasp.

In another article we will talk about these other advantages of the hive protector module:

1. Protects from the Asian wasp, hornets, varroa-carrying bombus and other insects and animals.

2. Great acceleration of the bee both entering and leaving the protective module.

3. Mimetized that prevents the Asian wasp from detecting in time where the bees leave.

4. Sonic effect to intimidate the Asian wasp.

5. Temperature regulator thermal effect.

6. Prevention of varroa by not allowing the ground bombus to enter the hive.
