Pillage between bees

Tips to avoid or reduce pillage

We understand as pillage to the action that honey bees do from a hive when they steal food (honey, pollen ...) from another hive. Normally the pillage occurs when there is a shortage of food in the environment (either shortage of pollen or nectar) and it may be the case that the hive that suffers the pillage ends up succumbing to the attack of the aggressive hive, which is the strongest.

The shortage of pollen or nectar can occur in the natural environment in which the hives are because the specific season in which the surrounding plants give the necessary nectar and pollen has ended, or for adverse climatic reasons such as droughts continued.

We must take into account the fact that there are breeds of bees that are more prone to pillage than others (this is the case of Apis mellifera lingustica).

To avoid pillage between bees from different hives, we can follow these recommendations:

- Try to match as much as possible the power and development of the hives of the same apiary.

- Handle honey and food from hives carefully to avoid odors.

- It is important not to breed queens of beehives

If a beehive is being attacked, it will be highly recommended to close the piquera completely for several hours and then reopen it leaving only a very small entrance space so that only a maximum of 2 bees can pass.

As a last step, if it is not possible to redirect the situation then we will have to transfer the hive to another apiary.
