As of February 13, 2021, we have detected the first velutina queens to emerge from the nest outside. We are on February 13 in Viveiro, (Lugo, Galicia), on a warm day in which the temperature is 18 degrees and we are located 38 meters above sea level.

These velutine wasps come out to replenish fluids and food in periods of heat just before spring.

It is also possible that it is a velutina drone wasp (velutina workers that remain dormant with the queen for 4 months until the following season). In February, it is still early to cheat, but detection traps can already be set to see which areas will be the ones that in spring and summer will have the highest incidence of vespa velutina nigrithorax (Asian hornet) reproduction and its consequent attacks on bee hives. .
